Waiqele property destroyed in fire

A property at Airport Back Road in Waiqele, Labasa, was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday.

The National Fire Authority says when the firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the timber and corrugated iron property fully engulfed in flames.

The property was vacant at the time of the fire.

The property was a timber and corrugated iron structure with a concrete floor and connected electricity.

The property was occupied by the owner’s relatives, although it was vacant at the time of the incident.

The fire resulted in 100 percent damage to the property.

There were no injuries or fatalities reported.

The suspected cause of the fire remains under investigation.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane is reminding people to take fire safety seriously.

He is urging families to check electrical connections, avoid overloading power points and never leave cooking unattended.

He is also reminding people to keep matches and lighters away from children.
