Pacific leaders are calling for a stronger global climate response as Fiji hosts Pre-COP31 discussions focused on protecting communities, livelihoods and the ocean from the escalating impacts of climate change.

Speaking at the Traditional Welcome Ceremony at the Sheraton Hotel on Denarau Island, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said the discussions are ultimately about protecting lives, communities, reefs and nations increasingly exposed to a changing climate.

Delegates will travel to Tuvalu today to see first-hand the realities facing Pacific communities, including king tides, saltwater intrusion and growing pressure on people’s ability to remain on their land.

Rabuka says the Pacific is not seeking sympathy.

He says the region wants the world to recognise that rising sea levels, warming oceans, water insecurity and threats to food security are not only Pacific problems, but shared global challenges.

Rabuka has outlined three key priorities for the discussions, keeping the 1.5-degree goal within reach, ensuring climate finance reaches communities that need it, and putting the ocean at the centre of global climate negotiations.

He has urged delegates to approach the week through the spirit of talanoa, with open, inclusive and honest dialogue, respectful listening and a focus on practical solutions.
