Fiji is moving to strengthen the way it manages and protects its water resources, with the government now shifting from policy development to implementation.
Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau says two new national water instruments will guide the country’s approach to water security, sanitation, hygiene and climate resilience.
He adds that the National Water Resources Management and Sanitation Policy and the Fiji Integrated Water Resources Management Plan were launched in July, aimed at improving coordination across Fiji’s water sector.
A National Water Resources Management Coordination Committee will bring together key groups to better manage Fiji’s water resources, while flood maps and plans will help communities prepare for flood risks.
“The Fiji Integrated Water Resource Management Plan, on the other hand, translates the policy direction into a 10-year strategic roadmap for the sustainable management, protection and development of Fiji’s freshwater resources. It focuses on improved planning, stronger institutions, better scientific information, enhanced monitoring and more effective regulations.”
Government Member Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure questioned the Ministry on its plans to protect water sources.
“The National Water Resources Management and Sanitation Policy and the Fiji Integrated Water Resources Management Plan?”
In response, Ro Filipe says the Ministry plans to strengthen water monitoring, including water levels, water quality, groundwater and catchments, as it moves into the implementation phase to improve water security.
Ro Filipe adds that the development of the two instruments received technical support from the Asian Development Bank and UNICEF.
