Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu says police cannot confirm how a person of interest in the missing cocaine investigation left Fiji, or whether the person is related to a high-ranking official.

Tudravu was questioned on how the person was able to leave the country while the investigation was underway.

He says police cannot confirm that as part of the ongoing investigation and warns against making assumptions.

“ I cannot comment on that. That’s your information. And how come the person left, considering that the investigation had started well before the person left the country? No, we cannot confirm that during the course of the investigation.”

Tudravu also declined to comment when asked about information that the person of interest is related to a senior official.

Police have identified six people of interest after interviewing 27 people.

Tudravu states five remain in Fiji, with measures in place to monitor the investigation.

He said border police would be alerted when those people are interviewed.

Tudravu adds that police cannot disclose the country where the person of interest is believed to have travelled.

He also defended the decision not to disclose the investigation when the complaint was first lodged in March.

Tudravu stated that not every investigation is made public because releasing information can compromise police work.

He said police would release information when they consider it appropriate.
