Taveuni Buses is calling for stronger traffic enforcement on the island following a fatal road crash and growing concerns over dangerous driving.

Management Operations representative Sami Prakash says concerns include alleged drink-driving, speeding, reckless driving and the unsafe transportation of passengers.

Motorists are also being accused of failing to slow down around school buses and students, with a student recently struck by a vehicle at Mua while attempting to board a school bus.

The concerns come after a fatal crash on Taveuni early yesterday morning, in which a woman lost her life, and several others were injured.

Taveuni Buses is calling for a dedicated traffic officer and regular patrols on the island to address dangerous driving and other road safety concerns.

Meanwhile, the Land Transport Authority is urging all road users to take greater care and responsibility on the roads.

The LTA says speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, unsafe overtaking, impatience and poor judgement can quickly turn an ordinary journey into a tragedy.

It is reminding drivers to slow down, maintain a safe distance and only overtake when it is safe, while passengers are being encouraged to speak up when drivers take unnecessary risks.

The authority says road safety is a shared responsibility and is urging everyone to make safer decisions and arrive alive.
