The Ministry of Housing is working with the Housing Authority of Fiji to formalize informal settlements and transition eligible families into secure home ownership.

Minister for Local Housing Maciu Nalumisa says during the last financial year, 16 tenants were issued formal leases, while the remaining applications are being processed.

“Formal leases provide families with secure legal tenure, access to formal housing, finance and services, and the confidence to invest in improving their homes.”

Nalumisa says under phase two of the project, 47 of 57 sitting tenants have received provisional offer letters.

Through another partnership with the Housing Authority of Fiji, 15 residential lots have also been allocated to eligible families from the Nabua Muslim League, Veidogo and Kilikali informal settlements.

Nalumisa says the project is an important step towards transitioning families from informal settlements into secure and formal housing.
