Despite falling one point short in the Vodafone Deans Under-19 final, Navatu Secondary School captain Vilimone Kanawabu says the team will always be proud of what it achieved this season.
Navatu’s fairytale campaign came to an end with a heartbreaking 15-14 defeat to Lelean Memorial School on Saturday, but the side’s journey captured the attention of rugby fans around the country.
Kanawabu believes the team has made history for Northern rugby by becoming the first school from the division to reach the Deans Under-19 final.
“I believe we’re the first school from the North to reach this, to play in the final of the Deans.”
The skipper credited faith and self-belief for helping the team overcome numerous challenges throughout its remarkable campaign.
“I want to thank God for being with us all the time. We never gave up or looked down on ourselves and we thank God for his protection and guidance.”
Kanawabu also paid tribute to the parents, guardians and supporters who stood by the team throughout the season.
“I want to thank all the parents and guardians of Navatu Secondary School for bearing with us and supporting us in this long journey.”
While the result did not go their way, the captain made sure those who backed the team knew their support did not go unnoticed.
“We thank you for your support. Even though we lost, I want to give credit to you all for standing with us.”
The one-point defeat denied Navatu a dream ending, but the school has etched its name into Deans history with its groundbreaking run to the final.
