Defence was the foundation of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School’s successful Weet-Bix Raluve Under-18 campaign, according to head coach Antonio Raboiliku after beating Lomary 13-12 in the final yesterday.

While many focused on the side’s attacking ability throughout the season, Raboiliku says the hard work done in defence ultimately played a decisive role in the team’s title-winning run.

“We worked on our defence throughout the week.”

The coach revealed that the girls were constantly reminded of the importance of stopping points just as much as scoring them.

“We stood by the saying that tries win tournaments, but defence wins championships.”

Raboiliku said the team knew it would face a tough challenge against Lomary Secondary School, having previously lost to the side in the zone final earlier this season.

“We wanted to come and win, but we knew it was going to be hard. Lomary is a very good side.”

He also acknowledged the contribution of parents, supporters, sponsor CK Ezy Bargain and the school principal, who supported a squad largely made up of Under-16 players competing above their age grade.
