The Sugar Cane Growers Council has raised concerns about the increasing trend of cane burning this season.
The SCGC says while some cases were a result of the accident, some burnings were done intentionally.
The Council states that as burning grows, more cane is burnt and financial losses are incurred
It adds that in principle, a loss of an average of $3-$5 per tonne hurts the industry badly.

The Council stresses that burning cane also reduces the growers’ income and lowers the quality of cane.
It also says that burnt cane increases the cost of harvesting operations.
