Suva Grammar School produced a stirring 36-21 victory over Lelean Memorial School to lift the Vodafone Super Deans trophy and bring an end to their 21-year drought.

The roar that had been building for 21 years finally burst into life as the Grammar Lions delivered a performance of composure, power and determination on the biggest stage.

Grammar controlled the opening half with purpose and intensity, crossing for three tries through Avanua Tevita and a double from Viliame Daurua, with two successfully converted.

Lelean responded in the 27th minute when Ratu Apenisa Navukitu powered over for their opening try and converted his own effort to keep his side within striking distance.

Grammar missed a penalty opportunity but still carried a commanding 19-7 lead into halftime.

Lelean came out firing after the break and wasted little time finding a way through Grammar’s defence.

Just a minute into the second half, Jovilisi Pagapo crossed for a converted try, cutting the deficit and giving Lelean renewed belief.

But Grammar refused to surrender their grip.

Daurua completed his hat-trick to stretch Grammar’s advantage to 24-14, before captain Waisale Bolakoro capitalised on a lapse in the Lelean defence, sliding through for another crucial try to make it 29-14.

The pressure intensified when Lelean were reduced to 14 men after a dangerous tackle saw a Grammar player lifted and driven into the ground.

Grammar immediately turned the extra-man advantage into points, slicing through the Lelean defence for another superb try to Saulo Saunakoroi, which was successfully converted.

Lelean managed a late try to add to the scoreboard, but the damage had been done.

The final whistle brought more than victory for the Grammar Lions.

It marked the end of a 21-year wait — a moment their players, coaches, old scholars and supporters had dreamed of for generations.
