Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka says the Fiji Pro is more than an international surfing event, providing a major platform to showcase Fiji and create opportunities for local communities.

Speaking at the official opening of the 2026 Fiji Pro at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, Gavoka says last year’s event reached 7.77 million views worldwide and generated close to US$7 million in brand exposure for Fiji.

He says the event also injected about $2.6 million directly into the local economy, benefiting boat operators, resort workers, small businesses and local surfers.

Gavoka says Fiji’s tourism success must not only be measured by visitor numbers, but by how much tourism contributes to communities and protects the environment.

He says Fiji welcomed more than 105,000 visitors in July, the highest monthly total ever recorded.

Gavoka says the growth brings greater responsibility, particularly in protecting the reefs and ocean that underpin Fiji’s tourism industry.

He says the Fiji Pro will also create opportunities for young Fijians in areas including surfing, coaching, hospitality, marine conservation, media, tourism and business.

The 2026 Fiji Pro brings together 24 of the world’s best women and 36 of the best men from 16 countries, competing at Cloudbreak.
