Naweni Secondary School will be one of the smallest teams competing at this year’s Coca-Cola Games, having been established just three months ago.
Head coach Sirilo Vukica said their initial goal was simply to give athletes exposure at the zone meet, with no expectations of qualifying for the national competition.
Currently, the school consists of just a single Year Nine stream.
Vukica admitted they were surprised when seven athletes secured qualification for the Coca-Cola Games, exceeding all expectations.
“We just told them to give their best at the zone, we weren’t there to win medals but get exposure as we are a newly opened school. We were very surprised when we had athletes qualifying for the games.”
Despite being a new school, the strong support from parents and teachers has provided encouragement and confidence as the team prepares for the competition.
