Pacific Recycling Foundation CEO Amitesh Deo has highlighted the issue of unhygienic practices resulting from traffic congestion in Fiji.

Drawing attention to the recent discovery of urine-filled bottles during a campaign, Deo emphasized the need for urgent measures to address the root causes behind this behavior.

He says the use of plastic bottles as makeshift urinals during long commutes has raised concerns about public health and waste management.

“Because we realized it was just not one bottle. There were several bottles during that campaign that we found filled with urine. And we began to talk to communities then, especially those around here. And one major problem that we found was why people were actually coming out openly and telling us that they were actually behaving like that. And the root cause of that is the traffic jam that people are stuck in for 2 hours at a time, 3 hours at a time, traveling between here and Suva for employment and all that.”

Deo emphasized the urgent need for solutions as traffic jams and the increasing number of vehicles worsen the problem.

He states that resolving the long-standing traffic congestion issue may require time.

Deo emphasized the importance of creating basic restroom provisions as a tangible step towards respecting citizens’ rights and enhancing their well-being.

Deo has called on relevant authorities to take immediate action to ensure the well-being and dignity of citizens during their daily journeys.
