January 8, 2026 7:10 am

Island communities in Lau are being encouraged to invest in agriculture and marine resources to grow local businesses and reduce reliance on the mainland.

The Vanua of Lau is exploring opportunities to support entrepreneurship and small-scale enterprises across its many islands.

The focus is on producing goods locally to avoid high transport costs and to ensure income remains within island communities.

iTaukei Trust Board Chief Executive Officer Aisake Taito says Lau has large areas of idle land, including coconut plantations, as well as rich marine resources that can be developed sustainably.

He says these resources can support long-term economic growth if communities take the lead.

“This initiative is aimed at ensuring that our resources are used wisely and that our people are at the forefront of benefiting from them.”

The Lau Provincial Council is working to identify and secure markets to support locally produced goods.

The initiative aims to strengthen self-reliance while ensuring island communities fully utilise and protect their natural resources.
