The people of Tarukua Village in Lau now have safer access to the local school and main walkways following the completion of a new concrete bridge and footpath.
The previous corrugated iron bridge was washed away during heavy rains, cutting off the village and creating daily challenges for children, elders, and families.
The project was supported under the Village and Community Bridges and Foot Crossings Programme, with the government contributing $25,000 for materials.
Villagers provided labour and technical skills, transporting materials inland and constructing the bridge themselves.
Nine solar footpath lighting kits were also installed to illuminate main walkways and the village green, improving safety for evening activities.
Assistant District Officer for Lau Province, Penina Wainiu, says the village qualified for assistance after submitting a formal request through a meeting.
