Manchester United have begun preliminary talks with former players Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over taking charge as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

BBC Sport reports discussions are at an early, exploratory stage, with Carrick understood to be a serious contender. United are yet to decide who will temporarily replace Ruben Amorim, who was sacked on Monday after a turbulent 14-month spell in charge.

Former midfielder Fletcher has been appointed interim manager and will remain in the role until a caretaker is named. Director of football Jason Wilcox has held talks with Fletcher, Solskjaer and Carrick, while another former United striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is also believed to be in contention.

Van Nistelrooy previously oversaw three wins and a draw during a brief caretaker spell in 2024. Solskjaer similarly took over on an interim basis in 2018 before becoming full-time manager.

United are expected to appoint a permanent manager in the summer, with Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi emerging as early candidates.
