Fiji’s preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland are progressing under a long-standing funding framework that places the responsibility on a three-way partnership between the government, FASANOC, and national sporting federations.
FASANOC chief executive Vanessa Kilner says the cost of attending the Games is traditionally split into thirds, with government funding one portion, FASANOC covering another, and national federations responsible for the remaining share.
However, she stressed that in practice, FASANOC continues to absorb a significant part of the federations’ burden to ease financial pressure across the system.
With current estimates placing the cost at around $16,000 per person to travel to Glasgow, Kilner explained that while a strict one-third split would see federations contributing more than $5,000 per athlete, FASANOC has reduced that levy to about $1,500 per person.
She was emphatic that athletes themselves are not levied, clarifying that any financial obligation sits solely with the national federations.
Kilner noted that federations are aware years in advance of the major Games they will attend and should have long-term commercial sustainability and fundraising plans in place.
She expressed concern that, in recent years, some federations have shifted this financial responsibility onto athletes, a practice she says runs counter to the intended partnership model designed to protect and support competitors.
Fiji’s provisional Commonwealth Games delegation currently stands at around 72 members, though that number is expected to change as several sports still need to qualify.
Kilner added that overall costs could still be reduced if additional sponsorship or revenue is secured.
She also acknowledged the support already provided by the Fijian government, thanking the National Sports Commission for committing funding toward Fiji’s Commonwealth Games campaign.
