The Fiji Police Force maintains its position on traditional reconciliation over legal matters, saying that it remains unacceptable under the law.
Chief Planning, Research and Doctrines, Aporosa Lutunauga says people who have taken the law into their own hands have to be taken to task.
Lutunauga says every case reported and registered has to be processed through the court of law.
“I know that it is something that is traditionally, but we as far as from a policing perspective … we do not entertain that because an offence has been committed. They can conduct reconciliation on their part, but on the offence that has been committed … we will process and we will charge people for that.”
Lutunauga has issued a stern warning that they will not entertain traditional reconciliation, especially for serious cases such as sexual offences.
He says they continue to stress on the matter during their visits to communities through the Duavata Community Policing Programme.
Lutunauga says they continue to review and revamp their policing programme to ensure its efficiency.
