Deputy Prime Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, made a resounding commitment to transparency and the pursuit of sustainable development goals during the presentation of the nation’s second Voluntary National Review.

Prasad emphasized this while presenting Fiji’s second Voluntary National Review on progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals.

Prasad says while commendable strides have been made in the implementation of certain SDGs, progress has been less satisfactory in others.

“At the current pace, Fiji risks missing 75% of the 97 targets that we can measure. 30% of the measurable targets are regressing. Conversely, we have made significant progress on the SDG indicators, with 128 indicators having sufficient data compared to the Pacific average of 93.”

Prasad says they are fully committed to ensuring that the second voluntary National Review accurately reflects the status of the SDGs.

“These goals enable Fiji and our people to effectively confront global challenges. Pandemics and geopolitical tensions affect commodity prices, which further burden our economy and pose challenges to our development efforts. But despite these setbacks, our commitment to the SDGs remains firm.”

United Nations Resident Coordinator Fiji Dirk Wagener¤ has commended the government for its efforts to enhance data access and availability, which is crucial for accurately measuring progress towards the SDGs.
