The people of Lomaiviti and Lau have raised concerns that they still lack proper water supply and roads on their islands.
During the National Rural Development Plan consultations, representatives from these islands said the lack of development is affecting their livelihoods.
However, Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu says clear guidelines are needed to carry out development according to the needs of different communities.
Some villagers still do not have proper access to basic services following the impact of Cyclone Winston in 2016.
“In our division, there is a lack of proper water and sanitation, which is a basic need. The operations of the Water Authority of Fiji are limited to urban centres, so we at least request their assistance to treat the water.”
Tamani adds that roads in their villages are also in poor condition.
Minister Vasu says the consultations are being held to better identify development priorities.
He adds that the feedback collected will help the Ministry of Rural Development make more effective plans for these communities.
