The Ministry of Fisheries says sustainably managing the country’s fishing resources, both inshore and offshore, requires a collective and innovative approach.

Director of Fisheries Neumai Ravitu says the government cannot undertake the mammoth task alone as overfishing of the country’s fish stocks continues to occur in our waters.

She says, therefore, that the Ministry works in collaboration with development partners and agencies in this endeavour.

Ravitu says Fiji, like many other Pacific Island countries, is dependent on the fisheries sector for economic opportunities, and it plays an integral part in the lives of Fijians and therefore must be managed well.

“Our dependency on it and the unique challenges that are faced with, particularly in the management has increased over the years, so balancing the need for this economic development and imperative to conserve and manage, it puts a lot of pressure on government agencies that requires a lot of innovation and collaborative work.”

Ravitu says one of the Ministry’s main partners is the World Wildlife Fund for Nature Pacific, and a key component of this partnership is ensuring transparent practices are carried out by fishing vessels and companies, not only for the welfare of Fiji’s fishing resources but also for those who are dependent on the sector for their livelihood.
