The cabinet has approved the release of $8.2 million to top up payment for the final 2022 sugar cane season.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says this will be good news for the farmers as they will be paid five dollars per tonne which will increase the final payment to $6.12 per tonne.
Rabuka says this will further increase the final cane payment for 2022 crop season to a historic record of $91.38 per tonne.
He says under the master award cane farmers are paid in five installments.
“The first payment known as the delivery payment is made during harvesting. The second payment is usually made in January after cane crushing stops. The third payment is made in March and the fourth payment in May and the final payment also referred as wash-up payment is made in October.”
Rabuka says the final payment for the 2022 season crop will be paid before next Tuesday.
