Financial accountability is a top priority for the civil service. Ministries are stepping up efforts to ensure government funds are properly managed.
Public Service Commission Chair Luke Rokovada states Permanent Secretaries carry primary responsibility, but every public servant plays a key role in safeguarding public resources.
He adds financial accountability was a major issue at last year’s regional civil service leaders meeting. Progress has been made, he points out, but it continues to be a shared challenge across the Pacific.
“We have to be sure that the money is well spent. We make sure that the money is properly accounted for. Accountability, transparency, good governance is at the heart of leadership in government. So everyone has to play a very responsible role in terms of managing our finances. Money doesn’t grow on trees. We rely on the money that’s being allocated to us from finance.”
Rokovada also noted improvements in staff training, wellness programs, and digital systems across ministries.
Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo said the Pacific Public Service Leaders Conference underway in Suva would review last year’s achievements and set new priorities for the region.
