Online life challenges youth engagement in religion

January 8, 2026 7:18 am

Digital technology is creating challenges for religious institutions in keeping young people engaged with culture and traditions.

Arya Pratinidhi Sabha Patron Pandit Bhuvan Dutt says youths are spending more time online, which has reduced their participation in traditional religious activities and community programs.

He stresses the importance of passing on knowledge to the next generation.

“Because the elders will be gone, the youth will be there to carry on the work of the community, society, or religion. And unless we bring them with us and give them that knowledge that they really need, there will be difficulties.”

Dutt says the Sabha is strengthening group activities involving young people and working to bring them together.

Methodist Church President Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou also highlighted the need to enhance programs that improve young people’s religious knowledge.

He said the Church plans to work closely with Methodist schools, especially in outer islands and interior areas, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, to implement programs that connect youths to their faith and cultural values.

Leaders agree that meaningful programs, active participation, and collaboration with youth-focused initiatives are essential to ensure traditions and religious values are preserved for the next generation.
