Maumi villagers in Bau, Tailevu now have a safer place to turn to when disaster strikes following the commissioning of the Maumi Multipurpose Evacuation Centre.

The centre was officially opened by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, strengthening disaster preparedness for a village highly vulnerable to cyclones, floods and climate threats.

More than just a shelter, the facility will serve as a safe haven during emergencies and a community space for meetings and livelihood activities in normal times.

Minister Ditoka says the centre reflects the Government’s commitment to protecting rural communities.

“This is not just a building. It is an investment in safety, dignity and resilience for the people of Maumi.”

The project was funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency and implemented by IOM Fiji, in partnership with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and the National Disaster Risk Management Office.

Village Headman Jone Lacarua thanked the Government and partners, saying the centre brings peace of mind to villagers.

“This will protect our children, women, elderly and people with disabilities when disasters hit.”

The centre will benefit 42 households, supporting about 156 villagers, and will also serve as a coordination point during emergencies.

Training has been provided to ensure the facility is managed and maintained by the community.

Minister Ditoka urged villagers to take ownership of the centre and use it wisely as a symbol of Maumi’s strength and readiness for the future.
