Pape Gueye’s extra-time strike has sealed Senegal’s second Africa Cup of Nations title after a chaotic and controversial final against hosts Morocco in Rabat.
The match boiled over at the end of normal time when Morocco were awarded a late penalty after VAR intervention, triggering angry scenes as Senegal players briefly walked off the pitch and fans clashed with security.
With the pressure on and history at stake, Brahim Diaz stepped up deep into stoppage time but his attempted chip down the middle was calmly saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Gueye struck just four minutes into extra time, giving Senegal the breakthrough in a tense contest that offered few clear chances.
Morocco pushed hard for an equaliser, coming closest when Nayef Aguerd’s powerful header crashed off the crossbar.
As rain poured over Rabat, Morocco’s 50-year wait for another Afcon title ended in heartbreak, while Senegal stood tall once again as kings of Africa.
