Plans are in place to modernize how government fleet vehicles are managed, with a dormant tracking system set to be revived after falling into disuse in 2018.
The system, developed under ITC Services, was never fully implemented. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad attributes the lapse to staff turnover and the lack of technical updates.
He says the government is now upgrading its Vehicle Management System to improve oversight of both leased and state-owned vehicles.
“It will allow the government fleet management team to manage all whole-of-government vehicles from entering vehicle information to running reports such as quarterly reports, which are currently managed manually.”
Professor Prasad says once revived, the upgraded platform will provide real-time tracking and allow for more transparent monitoring of vehicle usage.
