Dual citizen strongly recommends allowance to contest municipal council elections

October 16, 2023 6:18 am

More dual citizenship holders are pushing for a change in the act to allow them to contest the municipal council elections.

During the public consultation on the Local Government Electoral Process in Labasa, entrepreneur and dual citizenship holder Amelia Simmons stated it is unfair to bar them from the taking part in the elections.

According to Simmons, they’ve played their part in our country’s progress, and this rule discourages those who’ve come back to invest in Fiji.

“Most of us left during the coup, we have now returned to our country of birth. This is where our interest is and this is where our loyalty lies. It is not a topic of security … I do not think that is.”

In response to the recommendation, Fijian Elections Office Acting Manager Legal, Mesake Dawai says there is an alternative.

Dawai says dual citizenship holders have the choice to renounce their other citizenship in order to run for the municipal elections.

He says they welcome the recommendation despite the alternative.
