January 8, 2026 5:40 am

Japan will provide around $12.5 million in grant aid to Ministry of Local Government for new waste management equipment.

The funding is being provided through Japan’s Economic and Social Development Program, which supports socio-economic development in partner countries.

Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa and the Japanese Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission Isami Takada will formalise the assistance today through the signing of an Exchange of Notes.

The Grant Aid contract will then be signed between Minister Nalumisa and JICA Resident Representative Yumi Kimura.

The Ministry will use the funding to purchase essential machinery including dump trucks, compactor trucks, excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, wood chippers and ride-on mowers.

The new equipment is expected to improve waste collection, transportation and disposal services across municipalities, supporting cleaner, safer and more efficient urban environments.

Nalumisa says the machinery will also strengthen councils’ ability to manage emergencies, increased waste volumes and disaster debris, while ensuring continuity of day-to-day operations.

Japan’s Economic and Social Development Program provides funding for equipment, machinery and industrial materials to enhance public services, infrastructure and national resilience.
