Fiji is on track to register its first locally trained dermatologists in 2027, marking a major milestone in strengthening specialist skin care services.

Speaking while opening the Pacific Islands Dermatology Conference in Tamavua this morning, Minister for Health Dr Atonio Lalabalavu stated that Fiji has made significant progress in dermatology training and specialist care.

Dr Lalabalavu says his Ministry has demonstrated its commitment to advancing dermatology in the Pacific through the establishment of the Pacific Dermatology Training Centre at Tamavua Twomey Hospital.

The Ministry has also worked closely with Fiji National University to formally recognise postgraduate Diploma and Masters Qualifications in dermatology.

Fiji now has three Masters Graduates in Dermatology who are expected to be registered as dermatologists in 2027.

The Minister describes the achievement as a major step forward for the country’s health sector, saying the specialists will help address the growing demand for dermatology services and strengthen specialist care.

Dr Lalabalavu acknowledged the contributions of Dr Margot and Dr Tuicakau in establishing the dermatology training programme.

He also highlighted the value of professional networking, urging conference participants to connect with colleagues and build partnerships.

Dr Lalabalavu thanked the organisers, including the International League of Dermatological Societies, the Pacific Dermatology Learning programme and the local organising team for hosting the conference.

The Pacific Islands Dermatology Conference brings together health professionals from across the region to share knowledge and strengthen dermatology services.
