More than 20 youths are participating in a workshop to revitalize knowledge of traditional protocol, facilitated by the Fiji Museum in collaboration with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs and a New Zealand–based company, The Conch Theatre.
Today marks the second week of the program, which is being held every Saturday and will continue over the next five weeks.
The aim is to counter the noticeable decline in traditional knowledge and confidence among youths, particularly young men, as they are traditionally entrusted to carry out these roles.
Interim Manager for Visitor Experience at the Fiji Museum, Late Yaqona, says the workshop is addressing these challenges by collaborating with relevant agencies to help participants gain a practical understanding of proper protocol, language use, and cultural expectations in “Veiqaravi vakavanua.”
She adds that the Fiji Museum has facilitated similar workshops in the past and hopes to expand them in the coming months and years.
Yaqona is encouraging the public to take pride in their identity, and to help rejuvenate that passion, they should be aware of the Fiji Museum and make use of its visitation packages ahead of World Museum Day in May.
