More than 1,700 people across the country have helped shape Fiji’s Draft National Ageing Policy 2026–2035, with the Government confirming the process was driven by extensive nationwide consultations.

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran told Parliament the policy was developed through a structured and inclusive approach following its launch on 23rd February this year.

Kiran says consultations first began with Government ministries, service providers and key stakeholders to align priorities before expanding to communities across all four divisions and 15 districts.

She says over 100 consultation sessions were held, allowing older persons to share their lived experiences, challenges and aspirations.

A multilingual online survey was also used to widen participation.

The Minister says that while early discussions focused on existing social protection programmes, the consultations evolved to address broader systemic issues and long-term solutions.

She adds that the aim is to ensure the policy is practical and forward-looking.

Kiran confirms the draft policy is now guided by six key priority areas — social protection, health, accessibility, digital inclusion, infrastructure and legal protection.
