April 20, 2019 4:59 pm

It’s been revealed there are many mediation cases pending before the court and the Fiji Mediation Center is calling on lawyers for their assistance.

Chair Jenny Seeto is calling on legal practitioners to put in more effort and help them clear some of these cases.

Seeto says the Mediation Centre has discovered that some cases have been sitting in court for more than five years now and nothings been done to ensure it’s cleared.

It’s important that the lawyers do support mediation because they are the ones who provide advice to their clients as to whether to go to mediation or actually to go to court and really when you go to mediation, the cost of mediation is a lot cheaper than actually going to court.

Mediation is a solutions-driven, problem-solving process and the Center facilitates an objective discussion on how to advance difficult situations.

The Fiji Mediation Center has had close to seventy percent success rate in 2017 while the 2018 statistics is still under review.

190 matters have been mediated at the FMC of which 67% cases have been settled.
