Senior citizens in Nadi are expected to receive a boost to their mental and physical wellbeing with the development of a new recreational park for the elderly this year.

The project is led by Vineel Nand, a young advocate committed to tackling the issue of elderly neglect in Fiji.

The park will feature gaming activities, gentle exercise equipment, seating areas, and a welcoming environment designed for relaxation and social interaction.

Speaking about the importance of the initiative, Nand said elders in Fiji often face a harsh reality, with family members often imposing mental and physical stress, isolating them, and leaving them to navigate the challenges of old age alone.

He added that senior citizens frequently choose to remain silent about abuses they face from their children or family members, often out of loyalty to their own family.

Nand says elders deserve to enjoy their golden years and feel appreciated.

When questioned about the cost and design of the project, Nand highlighted that his team is currently in the early stages, with costs and layout yet to be finalized.

“Right now, we do not have expertise in that field for building a recreational park, which is why we will be consulting experts from Australia and New Zealand to guide us on how to develop it.”

However, Nand is confident that construction will begin this year.

The Project Team is currently in talks with the Nadi Town Council to secure land for the project, and are also seeking sponsors to assist with financing the development.

He further highlighted that the Nadi project will not be the only one, with plans already underway to extend similar initiatives to other towns and cities across the country.
