A thirty-six-year-old man whose conviction was quashed and a retrial was ordered for the alleged murder of his wife today pleaded not guilty in the Suva High court.
Roneel Chand was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 18 years by Judge Justice Salesi Temo in 2013.
He was convicted of murdering his twenty-six-year-old wife in February 2011.
During the trial the court had heard that he set his wife on fire following a heated argument, in Reba Circle in Nadera, Nasinu.
His wife received first degree burns but went to the CWM hospital herself where she passed away five days later.
Chand filed an appeal and on November 30th last year and the Appeals Court had allowed the appeal against conviction, his conviction was quashed and a new trial was ordered.
Chand appeared in the Suva High Court today charged with one count of murder
The matter will now be called on February 23rd.
