Tubuna urges home agriculture to combat rising food costs

With concerns over escalating food prices and food security, Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister’s office, Sakiusa Tubuna, is challenging Fijians to make the most of the land around their homes by cultivating fruits and vegetables.

Tubuna underscores the importance of agriculture in Fiji, emphasizing that it serves as a critical source of income, livelihoods, and employment.

“Whilst people are complaining about the ever-increasing cost of living, I believe that some of these burdens could be cushioned if food gardens were encouraged. I continue to advocate for farmers’ active participation in the local value chain in order to deliver consistent quality fresh produce.”

He encourages people to actively engage in home gardening and small-scale agriculture, promoting self-sufficiency and healthier food practices within communities.

By doing so, he believes it can help alleviate the burden of increasing living costs while strengthening the local value chain for fresh produce.
