May 25, 2019 4:35 pm

With only two tournaments left in the World Sevens Series, competition amongst the top teams in the standings is getting tougher.

The top four teams from this year’s Series standing will automatically book a ticket to next year’s Tokyo Olympic.

Current Table leader the USA is hoping to finish top three in the London 7s tournament to maintain their leading position in the series standings.

Captain Madison Hughes says they hope to maintain their leading position after the London tournament.

“I think we’ve put ourselves in a strong position the bigger pressure would’ve been at the beginning of the year when everyone was starting of level so I think we’re just going to continue doing what we were doing this season and the guys are doing such a good job, taking game by game focusing on nothing beyond the task at hand. We’re gonna look to continue to do that. We’re in a good spot but we know that there’s a lot of good teams there.”

With the Olympic qualification on the line, New Zealand aims to improve its position and gain an edge over Fiji who is currently 12 points ahead of them.

New Zealand team Captain Scott Curry says their sight is fixed on improving their ranking.

“It’s on everyone’s mind I think. It’s pretty obvious, it’s what the series is all about. Top through goes through. It’s no secret to that. We’re still in third and we want to go a little higher than that so a couple of tournaments win would be good for us in the next two weeks.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji 7s side hopes to finish top of the London 7s tournament for a chance to win the World Sevens Series title and book a ticket to next year’s Olympic Games.
