Mental preparation is fundamental for Fiji 7s

May 31, 2019 5:00 pm

Over-thinking their huge task in Paris could affect Fiji 7’s performance in France this weekend.

Coach Gareth Baber says it is important that players are in a good mental and physical state before the tournament.

Perhaps to escape overthinking tomorrow’s game, the side took some time out to meet with local children, releasing pressure before hitting the field.

With Fiji and USA neck-and-neck for the series title, there’ll be no love lost in the City of Love over the next three days.

“My expectation is to move through to the quarter-final. We’re only going to be able to do that by beating three good sides consistently on the first day.”

The Welshman adds he will name his final 13 member squad based on factors he’s observed over the season.

“There’s a lot of factors you look at. Who’s got an injury, how they traveling, and their moods and their work around the group including their behaviors. Also experience level. All these things play a part in making the selection.”

With the series due to kick off tomorrow, and Fiji and USA fighting for the top spot, this weekend’s Paris 7s is building up to be one of the most exciting finishes to a Rugby World Series in recent time.

Meanwhile, Fiji plays England at 10.50pm on Saturday, meets Argentina 2.16am on Sunday and the final pool match is vs Ireland at 5.42am Sunday.
