It was always the Springboks goal to take the trophy home: Erasamus

November 3, 2019 7:00 am

South Africa Coach Rassie Erasamus says their target had always been set on winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

The Springboks beat England 32-12 in the final last night at the Yokohama International Stadium.

He says at the beginning of the tournament, the players had committed to spending 20 weeks in Japan and this meant that in the 20th week, the Springboks would be taking the RWC home.

Erasamus says this mindset to take the trophy home had helped his team a lot.

The Springboks Coach says they see this win as an honour.

We know there was a lot of luck involved, during the way getting here. But we are so proud, not just because we’ve won the trophy, but because we are South Africans and a lot of people thought we’d never make it and we just believed South Africans never give up and that makes us really proud.

Captain Siya Kolisi says he honestly cannot explain the feeling he had when he lifted the trophy last night.

To see the joy in my team mates faces that was the best thing I think for me, because I know how hard we have worked and how hard the coaches have worked and we are really just grateful you know. But the way we played, we wanted to say thank you to our Coach who’s come in and just changed a lot and on the way that we saw rugby as well and I am really grateful we could do this for him and the coaching staff and everybody in the management.

The Springboks became the first team to lose a pool match at a World Cup and go on to win it, having lost to the All Blacks in their tournament opener at the same Yokohama International Stadium.

South Africa have now added the 2019 trophy to past wins in 1995 and 2007, to match the All Blacks’ record of three titles.
