Lelean Memorial School’s Joseph Falemaka clinched gold with a throw of 33.65 metres in the senior mens discuss at the Triple N Zone.

Lelean Memorial School’s Joseph Falemaka is drawing belief from a breakthrough performance at the Triple N Zone, setting his sights firmly on a top-eight finish in the discus at this year’s Coca-Cola Games.

The 18-year-old from Lau delivered when it mattered, claiming gold with a throw of 33.65 metres—an effort that not only secured top honours but reignited his confidence in his final year of school athletics.

Falemaka was quick to credit the support system behind him, describing the moment as one shared with his teammates and family.

“I could see the excitement on my teammates’ faces after I got the gold. I’m grateful to the coaches for sacrificing their time to train us, and I dedicate this win to my family—especially my mum and dad—for everything they’ve done to support me.”

Despite the victory, Falemaka remains grounded, admitting his performance still falls short of his personal expectations. However, the encouragement from his team has fuelled his determination to improve ahead of the national stage.

“I’m not where I want to be yet, but it’s not too late. My goal is to make the top eight at the Coca-Cola Games.”

Meanwhile, Waidina Secondary School’s Ratu Iokobo Kuruduadua showcased grit in the intermediate boys 1,500 metres, clocking 4 minutes 36.53 seconds to secure gold. While a commendable run, his time remains outside the long-standing Games record of 4:11.60 set in 2014.

Kuruduadua highlighted the challenges of training conditions but emphasised the value of perseverance.

“We train on grass with rocks and mud, but it’s all about sacrifice and patience. Today, we’re seeing the results of that hard work.”

The Triple N Zone competition continues tomorrow, with more athletes looking to fine-tune their form ahead of the Coca-Cola Games.
