The Fiji Meteorological Services has warned maritime and coastal communities to exercise caution as the highest tides of 2025 approach this week.
The peak high tide is expected tomorrow in Vatia, Tavua, reaching a height of 2.23 meters around 5.24pm, followed on Thursday in Lautoka at 6:20 pm at 2.40 meters, and continuing at Port Denarau and Suva Wharves on Friday.
In a statement, the weather office cautioned that coastal structures normally safe at low tide may be submerged or exposed to stronger currents during these peak periods, creating hazards for boaters, swimmers, divers, and coastal workers.
Residents and ocean users are urged to plan activities carefully and avoid launching or landing vessels during the peak tide window.
Officials stressed that conditions can vary from one location to another, and safety cannot be assumed based on nearby areas.
Elevated water levels combined with wind or swell can further amplify the impact of the tides, putting jetties, seawalls, and other shoreline infrastructure under stress.
They urged that taking precautions and planning activities around the peak tide periods, maritime operators, coastal workers, and recreational ocean users can reduce risks and stay safe during these elevated tides, helping protect both people and property.
