October 9, 2019 1:02 pm

With Fiji Day celebrations to be held around the country tomorrow, for many ex-servicemen, it brings back a host of memories.

One, in particular, is 66-year-old Joji Volau from Lau who joined the military at a young age in 1968.

Volau says seeing people dress up in blue colors today in the capital city reminds him of the preparations Fijians did on October 10th in 1970.

He says our independence is something every Fijian should be proud of.

“It was and still is an unforgettable year. Because we gained independence. It was the biggest celebration I have ever seen in my life. There was so much entertainment from both young and old. Even I had to practice for our military march and performance. We had village heads from every corner present to witness the ceremony. We should be proud because Fiji gained independence from British rule.”

The ex-serviceman who is now a market vendor also highlighted the royal visit of Prince Charles in 1970 which made the event in that year even more exciting.

He says Fiji Day is a celebration most ex-servicemen look forward to.

Meanwhile, the Government has planned major celebrations tomorrow for Suva, Lautoka, Labasa and Levuka.
