Significant neglect of health care facilities

The Health Minister, who has visited over 50 facilities in the last 53 days, says that there has been significant neglect of healthcare facilities in the last 16 years.

Doctor Atonio Lalabalavu says Colonial War Memorial Hospital is not the only facility that is in need of repair, renovation, or a total makeover.

He says “they will prioritize improving and maintaining the 220 health facilities and associated infrastructures.”

“Except for a few health care facilities that are in good shape, the majority are in a poor state, with damaged infrastructure, an insufficient program for maintenance and upkeep, and poor water hygiene and sanitation facilities.”

Doctor Lalabalavu says Fiji needs dramatically improved health care and fairly compensated staff.

“We look forward to working with the PWD on repairing, renovating, or rebuilding some of the medical facilities.”

The Health Minister says the people’s coalition government is drafting plans for the revival of health and medical services in the hospitals, including maintaining facilities, services, skills training, and patient care.
