Miss Fiji pageant rejects racism claim

January 14, 2026 4:46 pm

The Miss Fiji Pageant has strongly rejected allegations of racism and discrimination, saying the organisation upholds diversity, inclusivity and respect for all contestants.

Speaking during a media briefing, pageant Director Ana Tuiketei said they were surprised by claims of racist behaviour, noting that no formal complaints had been lodged through the pageant’s established grievance procedures since the competition began.

The organisation said it operates under a grievance redress mechanism policy, which was formally communicated to all contestants and chaperones on November 30.

According to her, the policy provides clear avenues for reporting issues such as bullying, racism or misconduct, all of which are documented and addressed in writing.

“To date, there has been no grievance recorded or incident reported regarding racism or bullying adding that all allegations are taken seriously and would be investigated if officially submitted.”

Miss Fiji officials also emphasised the diversity within both the pageant and its leadership, citing contestants and representatives from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

They noted that Fiji’s current Miss Pacific Islands representative, Ailava Samuels, is of Samoan and Fijian heritage, reflecting the multicultural nature of the country.

The organisation highlighted previous contestants, including those of mixed heritage and Indo-Fijian background, as well as the diverse composition of its committee, stakeholders and international partners.

“We embrace diversity, respect cultures and traditions, and place human rights and humanity at the centre of everything we do.”

In response to concerns raised publicly, the pageant said it welcomes formal complaints supported by evidence and remains open to dialogue, including mediation or roundtable discussions, should parties wish to pursue the matter further.

The Miss Fiji Pageant reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and the wellbeing of its contestants, as preparations continue for Fiji’s participation in the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant.
