Fiji must act now to strengthen disaster preparedness by merging scientific forecasts with traditional knowledge, says Permanent Secretary for Meteorological Services Paula Baleilevuka.
Speaking at the Eighth National Climate Outlook Forum, Baleilevuka warns that climate-related disasters will continue to hit the country, causing heavy human and economic losses.
He cited major Pacific events including the 2014 Guadalcanal floods and Cyclone Pam in 2015, as stark reminders.

He pointed out that communities have saved lives by observing unusual animal behavior and environmental changes before disasters.
Baleilevuka also urged a return to traditional building methods that protect homes during cyclones.
The Permanent Secretary called on all stakeholders to commit to stronger climate resilience, highlighting that preparedness saves lives and livelihoods.
The two-day forum brings together experts to share insights on weather patterns, disaster readiness and climate adaptation strategies to safeguard Fiji’s communities.
