The Vanua Ko Lau is calling on Members of Parliament to pass the Constitution Amendment Bill, allowing proposed changes to be put to a national referendum.

In its submission to the Parliamentary Special Committee, the province called for stronger protection of indigenous land and resources.

Lau welcomed the proposed restoration of the Senate and supported the recognition of Christianity among Fiji’s founding values.

The submission also endorsed amendments to Clause 6 on ethnic identity.

Submissions included further recommendations that any future replacement of the Constitution be approved through a referendum, with an independent review of the Constitution every 10 years.

Committee Chair and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says tomorrow’s third reading vote in Parliament will determine whether the Bill proceeds to a referendum or is discontinued.
