The Environment Minister is calling on all Fijians to take greater responsibility for waste disposal, warning that pollution is threatening the country’s environment and future.
Lynda Tabuya says Fiji cannot protect itself from climate change while rivers, coastlines and oceans continue to be polluted by rubbish and plastic waste.
The Minister says waste has become a major environmental and public health issue and urged people to change their behavior.
As part of efforts to address the problem, she says the Ministry has finalized the National Integrated Waste Management and Pollution Control Strategy 2026-2035 and is launching Fiji’s first National Plastics Inventory.
She says the government is also working on Container Deposit Regulations to encourage recycling and reduce littering.
Tabuya says businesses, communities, and households all have a role to play in reducing waste and protecting the environment.
Fijians are being urged to avoid littering, reduce the use of single-use plastics, and dispose of waste responsibly.
Tabuya says protecting the environment requires action from everyone and that small changes in daily habits can make a big difference for future generations.
She made the comments while observing World Environment Day, which was observed on Friday.
