For families in Bureta, Moala, and Ono-i-Lau, long and costly travel to access essential services is about to become a little easier.

The Government has approved the expansion of the Domestic Air Services Subsidy Programme to include the three remote routes, with subsidised weekly flights soon to be introduced.

For many residents in these maritime communities, the move means quicker access to healthcare, education, and work opportunities—while also making it easier to stay connected with family across Fiji.

It is also expected to support small businesses and boost local tourism, which often depends on reliable and affordable transport links.

Beyond the flights themselves, the expansion is being seen as a lifeline for isolated communities, offering improved access, greater opportunity, and stronger connection to the rest of the country.

The programme will now move through the Government Tender Board process before implementation begins.
