Baber backs his players to defend well

January 27, 2018 12:41 am

Fiji Airways men’s 7s coach Gareth Baber is backing his players to defend well ahead of their game against Russia and New Zealand at the Sydney tournament.

Baber says they need to fix their defense and work on their attacking structure to counter both opponents.

“It’s all about defending good, lesson learnt from Samoa. It’s about showing patient with the ball. Don’t give it to them. We need to defend well and attack fiercely.’’

Meanwhile, Fiji have gone five tournaments without making a final, having finished fourth in Dubai and fifth in Cape Town last month.

Brisbane and the Gold Coast proved to be happy hunting grounds for Fijian players in the past, but not Sydney.

Since the start of the Sydney 7s, Fiji came away disappointed in 2016 and 2017.

Fiji will play Russia in its second pool match at 5.09pm today before facing New Zealand at 8.42pm.

The Cup quarter-final kicks off at 12.28pm tomorrow, semi-final begins at 6.36pm and the final is schedule for 9.48pm.

You can watch the tournament live on FBC TV and catch the commentaries of Fiji’s game on Radio Fiji One.
