The lack of proper public restroom facilities at the Naqara Business Centre on Taveuni is becoming an increasing concern for vendors, residents and tourists who visit one of the island’s busiest commercial hubs each day.
Roadside vendor Adi Ana Aliti says the issue has persisted for years, forcing some people to use nearby bushes and vacant areas while others are paying to access private facilities nearby.
Vendors are now calling for the construction of public restrooms and a proper mini market to cater for the thousands of people who pass through the business centre daily.
They say the absence of public toilets has created daily challenges not only for businesses operating in the area but also for members of the public and visitors to the island.
“The issue of not having proper restroom facilities is a major challenge for us vendors and even members of the public who come to the centre for shopping. It has been like this for quite some time, and even tourists face the same problem when they visit Naqara and are unable to find proper restroom facilities.”
Vendors claim the issue was raised with the Savusavu Town Council several years ago, but little progress has been made despite growing concerns over public health and sanitation.
They warn that some people are now resorting to using nearby bushes and areas behind buildings because of the lack of public amenities, while others avoid drinking water during the day to reduce the need for restroom access.
Another vendor, Teresia Matavesi, says a proper market facility with public amenities would greatly improve conditions for businesses, residents and visitors alike.
The Naqara Business Centre falls under the administration of the Savusavu Town Council, with vendors hoping their calls for improved public facilities will finally be addressed.
